Let your child help choose
Offer two or three books and let your child pick. Returning to a favorite book is valuable; repetition helps children notice language and anticipate what comes next.
Talk about the pictures
Pause to notice expressions, actions, colors, or small details. Picture talk allows children to participate even before they can follow every word.
Ask open questions
Try “What do you notice?” or “What might happen next?” Accept short answers, gestures, and imaginative ideas instead of testing for one correct response.
Follow the child’s attention
It is fine to shorten a story, reread one page, or stop and continue later. A positive shared experience matters more than finishing every page.
